occupies half of the beautifully refurbished top floor in an historic 200 year old building. we are a group of teachers who come from a wide variety of backgrounds but are united in our belief that the different exercise systems we teach (pilates, yoga, tai chi) can be open to all people of different ages and sexes and that the body and mind can be brought back into harmony through developing an awareness and sensitivity from a deeper approach to exercise. we specialise in small classes with a maximum of 8 or 9 people. this allows for a more careful teaching approach with hands on guidance whenever required, giving clients a more accurate and secure experience. the malt barn is also the only studio in st andrews to offer one-to-one pilates apparatus sessions, which are especially good for clients who have back or joint injuries. please contact shelagh for further details. bad posture is not necessarily an age related problem; it can afflict all of us at various times due to any number of factors; from stress, illness and simply the habits we develop as a consequence of modern life. we do not represent a ‘quick fix’ approach to exercise, but by participating in any of the sarah brassey yoga yoga has been a part of sarah’s life since she was a student in 2000, when she found it invaluable to help deal with stress, busy days and sleepless nights. since then yoga has helped sarah through periods of change in her life, especially starting a family, and is now a major part of her everyday life. before having children, sarah was a secondary teacher. after having her first child she took a career break and trained with birthlight to teach mum and baby yoga. discovering a love for teaching yoga as well as practicing, sarah decided to change careers and continue her yoga teacher training. sarah originally trained with birthlight and rainbow kids yoga, specialising in postnatal yoga, yoga for toddlers, children and families. she went on to study with cys (registered with yoga alliance) for her 200hr yoga teaching qualification. sarah continues to expand her knowledge and understanding of yoga through cpd sessions, further training and personal reading. she spends her days looking after her family and teaching yoga to parents and babies, children and families, in private classes and in schools and nurseries. sarah has practiced various styles of yoga throughout her life, but her preferred personal practice is ashtanga. her adult classes are based around the traditional ashtanga system, which combines breath and movement to create a moving meditation. working with a familiar sequence of physical postures allows the mind to quieten and provides a mental break whilst still energising the body. sarah passionately believes that yoga st andrews and completed her pilates teacher training in matwork at the brigid mccarthy studios in edinburgh. read biography contact julie × close julie brooks pilates julie starting taking pilates as a way to improve her level of fitness and overall sense of well-being and it quickly became an important part of her life. when not practicing pilates, julie works in the school of management, university of st andrews, where she is the director of the masters programmes and oversees a large group of international students. as part of her work, julie is a lecturer and educator with more than 10 years of teaching experience. julie travels internationally for her work and she has done pilates and yoga while abroad, including attending classes in moscow, st petersburg, taipei and bangkok. one reason she was inspired to become a pilates instructor was to have a solid understanding of the theory and practice of pilates, allowing her to practice when she is on the road. however, during her training, she enjoyed teaching pilates so much that she decided to offer her own classes. julie completed her pilates teacher training in matwork at the brigid mccarthy studios in edinburgh. while training, julie took classes with a wide variety of teachers in north east fife and has found inspiration in the classes she has taken, in particular those with shelagh and fred. she is an affiliate member of the pilates foundation and has recently completed cpd courses in pilates for seniors and osteoporosis from polestar pilates and a one-day course focused on the psoas muscle. julie enjoys going for long walks along the fife coastal path with her flat-coated retriever, lula, as well as running, swimming and cycling and she has completed several triathlons. she finds that pilates has really allowed her to move with more grace and balance and her improved core strength helps with all of these other forms of physical activity. it also helps her to recover quickly from long-haul her over all strength and was instantly hooked. however it does so much more than that for her. pilates has improved the quality of her life after having a bad road accident. with movement and pilates
